What's New Furman University: Across the country, colleges and universities are leading the way in taking up solutions to global warming, from reducing energy use and educating tomorrow’s leaders about energy and climate to leading research on new energy technologies. Those most successful in integrating climate work into campus life, the curriculum, and the institution’s broader community do so based on a comprehensive plan of action, often starting with calculating the institution’s overall emissions in order to identify ways to cut carbon emissions from the physical plant. Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina is one such school – and their unique approach to planning, resulting in climate action that is integral to their master plan, is a model for other colleges and universities, according to a new case study by Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP), the leading non-profit working exclusively on solutions to climate change. “Furman has taken a leadership position in crafting an inclusive and responsive process for gathering, evaluating, and integrating the best approaches to reduce energy use, save money, and cut greenhouse gases,” said Jennifer Andrews, who heads CA-CP’s campus program, “and we offer this case study in the hope that other campuses will be able to replicate this process and benefit from it. Furman is eager to help other campuses generate similar results.” The highly competitive Clean Air-Cool Planet Climate Fellowship program returns for Summer 2010 with new Fellowship placements. The program pairs outstanding post-secondary students with challenging real-world opportunities to propel society toward a low-carbon future. Campus Team conducts workshop in Taipei, Taiwan
Anne introduced the trend in low-carbon economy and life styles, and Claire discussed strategic planning and implementation of greenhouse gas inventory and reduction in campuses and communities. Anne and Claire provided feedback to attendees’ breakout discussions and then lead a discussion of next steps and the future of the school’s network. The interactive website provides links to green building-related sites, directories of experts, and resources for funding and training. The free resources are particularly suited to colleges that have interest in green building but need expert guidance and help with funding for their sustainability efforts. As such, Jennifer Andrews, Clean Air-Cool Planet’s Campus Program Manager, will be presenting about achieving carbon neutrality at the New England Board of Higher Education’s “Greening Higher Education: Saving the Planet and Saving Money” conference. The conference, which will be held on May 4th at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston, MA, will convene leaders of higher education, government, and business to explore the important role that higher education holds in creating an environmentally friendly future and the perks and downsides associated with incorporating sustainability into the inner workings of higher education. SMART & SUSTAINABLE CAMPUSES CONFERENCE Power Shift 2009: Join the Rally on Capitol Hill From February 27 to March 2, more than 10,000 students from across the nation will gather at Power Shift 2009 in Washington D.C. to rally for the advancement of clean energy policies. Students will work together to push Congress to pass new, radical climate legislation and will shout until their voices are heard. The four-day event will include panels, workshops, and presentations, but the real action will start on Monday when students arrive on Capitol Hill to meet elected officials face to face. The day will end with a rally on the U.S. Capitol West Lawn. Clean Air-Cool Planet will be a part of the historic event, represented by former climate fellows Claire Roby and Casey Roe. Roby and Roe, a graduate and current student of American University, will be hosting a workshop on Clean Air-Cool Planet’s Campus Carbon Calculator.
